Elections in two days: another damage to education

MR. PRINCIPAL:

In each election, the closure of the polling stations that will be polling stations is enabled from Thursday afternoon until the following Monday, inclusive. More than two days of school lost for those boys and girls. If the proposal to carry out the electoral process prospers, logically we should add an additional lost day to that sad tally. Therefore, holding the elections in two days is not harmless, and if there are alternatives at hand to avoid it, they should be considered.

The University of Chile published a formula to carry out the elections in a single day, using an innovative and efficient approach, and over 50 different simulations. The suggested measures were to increase from two to four secret chambers per table or to increase them to three secret chambers in addition to 25% more tables.

These proposals not only represent an optimization of resources, and allow us not to alter an electoral process that has always worked well, but they also have a direct and positive impact on the students of all those establishments that are voting centers. During the pandemic, students suffered some of the longest school closures in the world, with all the damage that this causes.

Evidence indicates that school regularity is essential to maintaining consistent academic progress. Missed school days are not simply hours that are made up, but rather opportunities for interaction, social development, and intellectual growth that are unrecoverable. Let’s value the education of our children and not allow schools to continue closing for any reason. Education is an essential service.
