Darmstadt 98 receives record penalty for Pyro and Schokotaler |

SV Darmstadt 98 has to pay more than 100,000 euros for setting off pyrotechnics and throwing chocolate coins. The Lilies criticize their own fans and the chocolate ruling, but refrain from objecting.

The sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) has sentenced SV Darmstadt 98 to a total fine of 109,000 euros. The club has to pay 99,000 euros because Darmstadt fans set off pyrotechnics in the home game against Eintracht Frankfurt in January, as the DFB announced on Tuesday.

“This is by far the highest penalty that has ever been imposed on SV 98. We have now reached an economic level when it comes to pyrotechnic penalties, which is doing us massive damage,” said Darmstadt’s managing director Michael Weilguny. The southern Hessians agreed to the verdict.

The chocolate thalers are also becoming expensive

Another 10,000 euros are due because Lilien supporters threw chocolate coins onto the pitch during the home game against VfL Wolfsburg in December – as a protest against a possible investor in the German Football League (DFL). According to the DFB, the game had to be interrupted for around 40 seconds.

The people of Darmstadt criticized the sports court’s decision. “From SV 98’s point of view, the few chocolate coins that got onto the pitch through the safety net in the south stand were not the cause of the game being interrupted by the referee,” the club said. It is wrong “that the clubs are being sentenced to fines for peaceful nationwide fan protests in the wake of a very controversial association decision.”

Lilies waive objection

However, after intensive internal examination, the Lilies decided against an objection. Because almost all clubs have accepted the criminal complaints, there is no basis “for an almost sole action before the DFB sports court and possibly other instances,” as the Darmstadt-based company announced.
