Daily Faceoff Live: Which teams should make a hockey trade before the deadline?

Daily face-to-face Hockey analysts Frank Seravalli and Mike McKenna discussed some of the teams to watch at the NHL Trade Deadline on Daily Faceoff Live Tuesday:

Frank Seravalli: The social media sphere was bubbling Monday night. They took a look at the press seating chart and they noticed a few NHL GMs were in Calgary at the Saddledome for that Flames and Blue Jackets game with Johnny Gaudreau returning.

Kelly McCrimmon of the Vegas Golden Knights was there. Doug Armstrong, the general manager of the St. Louis Blues was there, as well as Scott Mellanby, their senior adviser to the general manager. And so a lot of people immediately wondered: what does this mean? I can tell you that for the most part that just means there is a top prospect game in Vancouver and that was an easy step along the way.

But more specifically, there will be traction and things will heat up. We’re still so focused on the rental market and certain pieces that could go in that direction. But I’ll throw you a few teams in terms of teams that could do hockey trades, which is a classic « guys with a contract term for another guy with a contract term. »

Which do you think is the one who needs it the most to get things moving? I’m going to go to the Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders, Florida Panthers for the reasons we just talked about, what about the Calgary Flames or the Pittsburgh Penguins – potentially burnt out teams and who don’t have a ton of wiggle room and/or assets to make things happen, but would like to do something we need to?

Mike McKenna: Among these clubs, I think Calgary is probably the one that could use a little help at all levels. Missing (Oliver) Kylington all year is hurting this club. You’re looking at someone like Andrew Mangiapane, who doesn’t live up to his ceiling expectations, and you probably can’t move that contract. If you’re going to hustle something to try to get it started in Calgary, I think there are contracts that could move. Even Backlund or Dube, do you do something a little drastic and move someone?

Pittsburgh, I think it’s more or less fair based on being the MO of Burke and Hextall is that they’re willing to do these trades that are shortcut trades. You look at Matheson for Petry or Marino for Ty Smith. I think they would like to give up on Pettersson and his $4 million contract. So I think those are the two clubs to watch, for me.
