Matt Larkin and Steven Ellis welcomed Daily Faceoff President Frank Seravalli to the guest seat as Seravalli talks about potential trade targets and what’s going on around Minnesota Wild defenseman Matt Dumba.
Dumba is listed at No. 9 on Seravalli’s top deadline goals.
Matt Larkins: So I wanted to start by talking about a name that hit the headlines yesterday. Minnesota Wild’s Matt Dumba was a healthy scratch, he’s top 10 on your Trade Board, so is it safe to assume that was a management asset sitting him down, what’s the latest on Dumba?
Frank Seravalli: No, so it wasn’t asset management by the Wild. In fact, it was purely game-based. He had a talk with head coach Dean Evason and worked through some of the issues they saw popping up in his game. Specifically, Tuesday night I know that Dumba was surprised and I think it hits him like a 2×4 in the face; you saw the Matt Boldy extension that came in earlier this week, seven years $49,000,000 and that basically spells the end of Dumba’s Minnesota tenure in stone.
So now the big question is will he move out before the trade deadline or will the Wild keep him as their own rental knowing he will be walking this summer? I think the scales have been tipped that Dumba is on the move and is the healthy stripe hurting his trade and comeback? Maybe, maybe not, but it would free up a bit of cap and flexibility for the Wild to come out and add to that deadline, they already have a bit of cap space right now. But, Dumba would provide additional flexibility if they wanted to go that route, they are not fully defined yet, but there has certainly been commercial interest from other teams.
