Challenges that AI acceleration leaves for data centers

With the accelerated expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI), data centers are being forced to evolve their system and adapt to new times. This is stated by Amilcar Beltrán, director of JLL Data Centers in Latin America, who explains that the ease with which the masses can access AI drives accelerated and drastic growth in data center infrastructure.

From these centers, according to JLL, it was established 10 years ago to increase the density of the racks to 10 kW on average. Now, Due to AI and high-performance computing, densities of up to 100 kW per rack are required.

Don’t get lost in Pulse

“The focus has shifted towards building larger and faster data centers, specially designed for meet the demanding demands of AI”, Beltrán highlighted.

With the above arises the challenge of equipment cooling, because the increase in the power of the equipment also leads to increases in temperature. Thus, they explain in JLL, The only cooling available and suitable for this equipment is liquid cooling.

“Liquid cooling, although it is a more efficient solution from an energy point of view, still faces great barriers to its widespread implementation,” says Beltrán.

The challenges that AI acceleration leaves for data centers

Meanwhile, data centers that do not have liquid cooling are not only forced to invest in this technology, but also to assume other costs related to infrastructure and installation, which would even cause servers to pause for the procedure.

With this panorama, JLL warns of the need for data centers to make structural and design modifications that allow them to adapt to the demands of AI. Thus, the changes should aim from a energy management to the adaptation of cooling systems, which includes a reinforcement of the physical infrastructure.
