Cape Verde is above average in sustainable development

The United Nations coordinator in Cape Verde, Patrícia Portela de Sousa, said today that the archipelago’s journey towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has indicators that are “more advanced than the global and regional average”.

“Cape Verde has recorded notable gains in its social, economic and environmental development process and the SDGs here are more advanced than the global average and much more than the regional average”, he stated, in Praia, during the Fair of Objectives of Sustainable Development, held as part of the United Nations Day celebrations.

On the sidelines of the same event, at the University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV), the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, said that the country “is on a good path” to achieving the SDGs, with positive indicators in areas such as eradication extreme poverty and resilience to climate change.

“We are on a good path, our assessment is positive, as is that of international organizations”, he stated, pointing out that the country still has challenges to face until 2030.

“Of course, we will continue to work so that we have more economic growth, more conditions for job creation, a significant reduction in poverty and inequalities”, he added.

Among the challenges, the prime minister pointed to job creation and the eradication of extreme poverty in a sustainable way.

The SDG Fair is organized by Uni-CV and runs until Friday, in partnership with the United Nations and aims to reinforce the transformative role of academia and technological innovation in achieving those objectives.

The SDGs are 169 measures, grouped into 17 major objectives (in the social, environmental, economic or institutional areas) chosen by the United Nations, which proposed the goal of implementing them by 2030.

Eradication of poverty, “zero hunger” and ensuring good health and well-being for all are the first three major objectives on the list.
