Beatings and insults, freedom of expression?

MR. PRINCIPAL

Last Wednesday, at the UC Central House we received José Antonio Kast. We were more than 200 young people who listened to the ideas of freedom and the importance of public service. What else happened? Members of the university left stood with a canvas outside the room in what they said “was their right of expression.”

What really happened was that they repeatedly tried to force their way in, banged on the doors, shouted insults and scribbles, and even barked.

What happened was not freedom of expression, it was an act of violence. It wasn’t freedom of expression, it was disrespectful. It was not freedom of expression, because I honestly have no words to describe what the university left understands by “peaceful demonstration.”

We are young people doing university politics and working for democracy in our university, and as a Trade Union Movement we have always had a commitment to freedom of expression, we will be the first and the last to defend it. But there is a sector that apparently is willing to do anything so that people who think differently cannot express themselves.

President of the UC Union Movement
