A avalanche was triggered at the level of the RD 18, near the Burdincurutxeta pass, at mendive. Seven vehicles were stuck in the snow in the middle of the afternoon this Thursday, January 19, 2023 with 18 people on board.
A true miracle
The snowslide occurred around 4 p.m. on the RD 18 near the town of Mendive. Two snow plows and 5 light vehicles were buried in the snow. Drivers and passengers had to be removed from the vehicles and brought to safety. Fortunately, “no casualties are to be deplored” declares the prefecture of Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
Deployment of three crews from the Oloron PGHM
Three crews from the Oloron PGHM traveled in 4×4 to the avalanche area. Indeed, the rescue helicopter could not take off due to wind gusts of 100km/h. The municipality of Mendive has made the communal hall available to accommodate the victims of this avalanche.
Traffic prohibited on the RN134
The circulation of all vehicles is prohibited on the RN134 between Les Forges d’Abel and the parking lot of the Somport ski resort until Friday January 20, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. given the weather conditions and the high risk of avalanches.
