An old basketball saying goes: The playoffs are where it counts. The performance from the regular season is history with the first jump ball of the post season. It doesn’t matter how well you performed before. The Skyliners Frankfurt have internalized this – and even went one step further in the playoffs.

Skyliners nail the basket

Against Jena The Hessians prevailed 3-1 in the quarter-finals. Remarkable. After all, both games in the regular season went to the competitor from Thuringia. The key to Frankfurt’s success: The league’s best defense only allowed an average of 69.5 points per game.

“The boys have taken our already strong defense to a new level,” praised head coach Denis Wucherer. In the regular season, the opponent’s average points average was 73.7. The problem: In the semifinals, Frankfurt will face the best offense in the league.

Trier with many weapons

The gladiators from Trier dominated the 2nd league. The Moselstadt team only suffered six defeats (with 28 wins) in the regular season and didn’t take their foot off the accelerator in the first round of the playoffs either: the hopeless Baskets from Münster were eliminated 3-0. “Trier played a great main round, held their own in the quarter-finals and presented a real sporting challenge,” said Wucherer. The league leader also won both games in the main round against the Skyliners.

Trier’s great strength is its many offensive weapons. Seven players score an average of more than 11 points per game. The Gladiators are equally dangerous under the basket and from outside. In the playoffs, power forward Moritz Krimmer recently excelled with a 19-point average. “Trier has even more personnel than Jena and is even more physical,” says Wucherer. The Frankfurt defensive specialists have a lot of work to do.

Just a sporty climber

The semi-final series will be decided in a best-of-five series. Game one takes place on Friday (7.30 p.m.) in Trier. The first home game in Frankfurt takes place on Sunday (4 p.m.). Whoever gets three wins first books the final ticket and has the right to be promoted to the Bundesliga. The Skyliners received the license for the upper house on Tuesday, the Gladiators would have to meet certain requirements if they were promoted.

The other semi-final between Hagen and Karlsruhe will not produce a promoted team. While Hagen didn’t even apply for the license, Karlsruhe’s application was rejected.

Because there will only be one sporting newcomer, the Skyliners could at least think about applying for a wildcard for the coming season in the event of a defeat. The Hessians certainly hope to be able to qualify in sport. “We are going into this matchup with broad chests and anticipation,” says Wucherer.
