Asian hornet traps are starting to appear along the D5. This is the most risky place

Up to eight dozen traps for Asian hornets will be placed in the Pilsen region, and specific beekeepers will take care of them.

When the first Asian hornet nest was recorded in Pilsen last fall, experts took notice. This invasive insect species specializes in hunting bees and can spread very quickly. It poses a significant risk not only for bee farms, but also for wild species of other insects, as it feeds on them. This spring, they were in western Bohemia more hornet queens discovered, which came to us by truck from France. Special traps, which are placed in the vicinity of previous finds, should also help to detect further occurrences of these unwanted insects. They are hung in selected places by beekeepers in agreement with experts from the Nature and Landscape Protection Agency of the Czech Republic, which coordinates the monitoring of the Asian hornet.

“The most important thing is the early detection of hornets. We try to involve various institutions, beekeepers and the public in the monitoring. Special traps were developed, and we collaborated on their production with scientists from the Regional Institute of Technology, the research center of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen,” says Zdeněk Myslík from the Nature and Landscape Protection Agency of the Czech Republic.

The Asian hornet specializes in hunting honey bees, which have almost no protection against it:

Asian hornet in the Czech Republic: How this killer hunts, what is the defense, what can it cause

The first traps were already placed near the beehives in Svátá Kateřín and in Nové Hospody in Tachovská, in Nýřany and other places. According to experts, it is important to monitor especially the surroundings of the D5 highway, which is potentially the most risky place.

“Traps only serve as a supplement to direct observation, they cannot capture Asian hornets from the wild. If they appear in them, you need to strain your strength and try to find and destroy the nest. In traps that were installed at the end of March In Pilsenno Asian hornets have appeared yet,” explains Tomáš Görner from the Nature and Landscape Protection Agency of the Czech Republic.

Inside the plastic trap, made on a 3D printer, is a container with sweet juice. The bait is covered with a lid, so the hornet or other insects will not drown in it. The main inlet to the trap is funnel-shaped. The hornet flies in, but because of its size it cannot get out. Smaller exit holes for smaller insects are located around the perimeter of the trap.

“People can report suspected Asian hornet sightings preferably with a photo to our e-mail [email protected] or via the application Nahlas sršen. The reports, of which we have already reached eight hundred, are subsequently checked. It is still true that public observation is the main helper in the discovery of new individuals. That’s how we found out about all the findings so far,” adds Tomáš Görner.

What does the Asian hornet look like:

Up to eighty hornet traps will be deployed within the Pilsen Region and will be looked after by specific beekeepers who will regularly check them, add bait, remove other types of insects caught and inform experts if a hornet is caught.
