Agony was on the verge of Eurovision in 2023. The Canarian artist, one of the public’s great favorites, obtained second position in the Benidorm Fest with its theme I want to burn, just behind Blanca Paloma who was finally in charge of representing Spain in the song contest. A result that was a relief for the singer, since he did not want to be in the contest.
As the 29-year-old interpreter explained in a surprising interview on the podcast Pop New received pressure and threats to be in the Benidorm Fest. “I didn’t want to go. They told me that I had to show up or they wouldn’t release the album, so I felt completely coerced. “I’m not talking about a record company, I’m talking about a specific person who no longer belongs to any record company that I know of.”
The main problem is that at that moment Agoney wanted to focus completely on the process of creating his studio album, Dichotomy, before delving into other projects. “I said, I want to make music, I’m fighting to release an album. I only had a couple of songs done. Why do I have to do things that I’m not in the moment for right now? Maybe I could have done it in the future much better and with all the desire in the world.”
What’s more, his candidacy for the Benidorm Fest prevented him from carrying out some of the professional plans he had in mind to promote his new creations. “The video clip was not made because that same person did not want to record because he was sure that we were going to go to Eurovision.” A delicate situation that made him suffer. “It was a very critical moment for me, I cried a lot. Until two weeks before, he was calling and saying he didn’t want to do it.”
Luckily, the performer has been able to move forward with his project, releasing his album, as well as the music video for I want to burn, a single that talks about homophobia and for which he has a special affection. “It is a song that was made with all the love in the world and with a lot of energy, without knowing that it was going to be for the Benidorm Fest.”
Will Agoney perform at Eurovision again?
During his time at Operation Triumph 2017, talent show in which he rose to fame, Agoney repeatedly expressed that he liked the Eurovision format and that it would be a dream for him to be able to go. What’s more, she applied for the 2018 edition with her partner Miriam Rodríguez with the song Magic. The winners of that preselection were Amaia Romero and Alfred García with the romantic ballad Your song.
After these two experiences, the singer has preferred to take a new direction away from Eurovision. “Now it’s time for something else, another path. There are many paths and they are all wonderful,” he confessed on the television program Martínez and Brothers.
