This year again, the association of towns and villages where life is good unveiled its ranking of the 34,820 metropolitan municipalities according to 198 official criteria (see methodology). In the Eastern Pyrenees, three villages located near Perpignan stand out. Here they are.

Montescot, the number one village in the Pyrénées-Orientales

No one does better in the department.Located south of Perpignan, between Villeneuve-de-la-Raho and Bages, Montescot ranks first among villages (municipalities of 500 to 2,000 inhabitants, editor’s note) where life is good in the Pyrénées-Orientales.

On a national scale, the municipality even obtains the 78e place in 11,175 villages with 500 to 2,000 inhabitants. A great performance for Montescot and its 1,647 inhabitants.

The study of the association of towns and villages where life is good tells us that more than half of the population is at least 45 years old. Regarding real estate, prices have increased by 21% between 2019 and 2022. Count, on average, 2,760 euros per m².

The fine performance of Peyrestortes

It comes in second place of the villages where it is good to live in the Pyrénées-Orientales. North of Perpignan this week, between Rivesaltes and Baixas, Peyrestortes is one of the nicest small towns in the department… and in France! If it does less well than Montescot, the village still comes in at a nice 253e position on 11,175.

If you don’t really know Peyrestortes, keep in mind that it is a locality of 1,527 inhabitants. Half of them are 45 years old. Glued to the airport, the town saw its real estate prices take off between 2019 and 2022 (+ 16%). The average price per m² is 2,060 euros.

Eus also stands out among the very small villages

If we focus only on villages with less than 500 inhabitants, the municipality ofHad comes first in the department. On the national level, she also performs with an honorable 916e place in 18,346 villages less than 500 people.

In this ranking, Eus is, without a doubt, helped by its living environment. And for good reason, it is one of the most beautiful village in Francewith one of the highest levels of sunshine in the country.

Ranking methodology

For the 2023 edition, the winners cover 34,820 municipalities in metropolitan France.

Each municipality is analyzed on 198 criteria, divided into 10 categories:
– Quality of life
– Security
– Health
– Transport
– Shops and services
– Education
– Solidarity
– Sports and leisures
– Real estate attractiveness
– Environmental protection (new category)

All the criteria come from official sources (no declarative element). The data has been updated with the latest available. Each criterion (with 3 exceptions) allows a municipality to obtain 0, 25, 50, 75 or 100 points.

A municipality has a number of points for each criterion. The points obtained for the criteria in the same category are added together. The result is called PC (Points for Category). Each municipality has 10 PCs.

These PCs are then weighted according to the order of importance of the categories, which is determined by the French, consulted by several OpinionWay polls since 2017.

The last survey is from October 2022. Weighted PCs are called PCP (Points for Weighted Category). A municipality has 10 PCPs. Then, for each municipality, all the PCPs are added up. This result is called TD (Final Total).

The municipalities are compared with each other from the TD. The higher the TD, the more the municipality obtains points in a uniform way between the categories, the better it is classified in the prize list.

Each commune is classified among all the communes of France, of its department, and according to its number of inhabitants (stratum of population) at the national and departmental level: 4 positions are thus established.
