Kingston to announce results of Midtown Thriving survey on Dec. 5 – Daily Freeman

KINGSTON, N.Y. — The city will unveil the results of its Midtown Thriving Survey on Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. at City Hall and on Zoom.

“We are excited to share the results of the recent survey for Midtown Thriving initiative, which asked the community to help identify Midtown’s needs, dreams, and priorities,” Mayor Steve Noble said Tuesday, Nov. 26, in a press release. “The results of the survey will help shape municipal policy and planning strategies and will be a guide for redevelopment of vacant and underutilized sites in the area.”

Bartek Starodaj, the city’s director of housing initiatives, said along with the survey results, officials will share what they’ve learned and ideas for moving forward.

Noble’s office said the city, in partnership with Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress, won a $228,559 New York state Department of State Brownfield Opportunity Area grant in November 2023.

The city and Pattern and Progress created a plan titled “Midtown Thriving: A Community Vision to Revitalize Vacant Properties” which lays out a redevelopment plan for vacant and abandoned properties within a 270-acre along the Broadway corridor,  Noble’s office said.

Noble’s office said the city also collaborated on the plan with the Full Frame Initiative. Officials said this social change organization “partners with organizations, systems, and communities across the county to fundamentally shift their focus from fixing problems to fostering wellbeing.”

Noble’s office said local “credible messengers” and other community partners including Tilda’s Kitchen on Broadway led the outreach efforts.

Noble’s office said the survey will inform the final plan submitted to the state Department of State to complete the Brownfield Opportunity Area nomination.

Officials added that Brownfield Opportunity Area designation prioritizes development in this area along with preferences for state programs, eligibility for pre-development funding, and unlocking additional brownfield cleanup tax credits for property owners and developers.

Spanish language interpretation will be available.
