After a process that (much to the dismay of the judge) has become a media circus, and after assuming his own defense after firing his lawyer, Arthur Fleck he seems to have completely let himself be possessed by his parallel identity as Joker. However, the death of a young inmate of the Arkham Asylum at the hands of the sadistic guardian Jackie (Brendan Gleeson) makes him regain, for a decisive moment, the notion of his own personality.
After having declared his love over the phone to Lee Quinzel (Gaga), Arthur enters the last session of the trial knowing that the prosecutor Harvey Dent (Harry Lawtey) will not settle for anything less than the death penalty. And, to everyone’s surprise, the protagonist renounces his role as Joker in the final argument, admitting his mental problems and recognizing that he needs help. It is then, just before the verdict is announced, that a car bomb that devastates the courtroom.
Among dozens of corpses, and with a Harvey Dent who lies on the ground with half of his face disfigured (an allusion to the genesis of the villain Two Faces), Arthur rushes out and ends up picked up by two of the fans who were crowding in front of the court, and then also escapes from them towards those stairs that became iconic in the first film.
On the stairs, Arthur knows very well, he is waiting for Lee who does not hesitate to deal him the final blow: She has never been in love with him, but of the Joker, and she has no intention of continuing with her love affair even if she is pregnant. Shattered, Arthur watches her drive away as the place fills with patrol cars.
After an ellipsis, we find ourselves back in Arkham Asylum, next to an Arthur who has escaped the electric chair and sees a cartoon of Pepe The Plague along with his companions. At that moment, one of the officials tells him that he has a visitor.
During the way to the interview room, another inmate approaches the protagonist with the excuse of telling him a joke. But this is a trick, because the subject in question takes the opportunity to call him “pathetic clown” before delivering a good round of stabs in the stomach.
During his agony, Arthur fantasizes once again about Lee and the child she is expecting, while his killer laughs non-stop with laughter that is very reminiscent of the Joker in the comics and the other Batman movies. Will Lee repeat with his son the cycle of abuse that gave rise to the monstrous alter ego of Arthur? Will this last-minute assassin be the Joker against whom a Bruce Wayne still child? We don’t know, and we probably never will.
