The iconic rubber-keyed Spectrum makes a return thanks to Retro Games

Retro Games Ltd and PLAION have today released The Spectrum, a modern recreation of the legendary 48K ZX Spectrum released by Sir Clive Sinclair in 1982.  This modern recreation is ideal for those remembering the halcyon days of coming home from school and loading up some great little games.  A new trailer can be seen below showcasing The Spectrum’s gorgeous design…

The Spectrum keeps the same original design of the iconic 48K ZX Spectrum while incorporating today’s technology and includes 48 pre-installed games so that players can just dive straight in without finding games to download.  However, players can also easily play any ZX Spectrum games from a USB stick.  Those of you looking at the picture of The Spectrum are probably wondering if the keyboard is functional, and the answer is yes. Just like the original computer The Spectrum has fully functioning rubber keys which will certainly tickle the nostalgia bone.

As mentioned above, there are 48 games pre-installed and these are as follows:

Alien Girl: Skirmish Edition • Ant Attack • Army Moves • Auf Wiedersehen Monty • Avalon • Bobby Bearing • Cosmic Payback • Devwill Too • Exolon • Fairlight • Firelord • Football Manager 2 • Freddy Hardest • The Great Escape • Head over Heels • Highway Encounter • The Hobbit • Horace Goes Skiing • Jack the Nipper • Knot in 3D • The Lords of Midnight • Manic Miner • Match Day II • Movie • Nodes of Yesod • Penetrator • Phantis (Game Over II) • Pheenix • Pyracurse • Quazatron • Robin of the Wood • Saboteur! Remastered • Shovel Adventure • Skool Daze • Snake Escape • Spellbound • Starquake • Starstrike II • El Stompo • Stonkers • TCQ • Target: Renegade • Technician Ted – The Megamix • Tenebra • Trashman • The Way of the Exploding Fist • Wheelie • Where Time Stood Still

The fun doesn’t end with these 48 games though as players will be able to put any 16K, 48k or 128k Spectrum game on a USB stick and play that, and there’s also a classic mode that takes players into the world of Spectrum BASIC programming.

Other features include:

  • A generous four save game slots per game (I wish we had that back in the day).
  • A rewind feature that allows players to rewind 40 seconds.
  • Distinctive multi-function keys with colour-coded labels.
  • Detailed control mapping instructions for all games.
  • CRT filter option.
  • Compatible with a variety of new and old proprietary and third-party controllers.
  • A game manual that looks just like the original.

“We’re thrilled to launch The Spectrum and deeply appreciate the enthusiastic support from the community. From hidden gems to a vibrant user culture, this project truly feels like Christmas 1982 all over again,” said Paul Andrews, Managing Director at Retro Games Ltd.

The Spectrum is available now from select retailers, priced £89.99.
