CULTURE – The days are getting shorter, Halloween has been over for almost two weeks and Mariah Carey has already made its famous It’s Time. Christmas is not very far anymore. But for the most impatient, Disney has unveiled a four-minute short film directed by Taika Waititi to already get you in the mood.

In The Boy and The Octupusavailable on YouTube since Tuesday November 12 and see belowthe New Zealand director recounts the encounter between a young boy and an octopus during a summer swim on the beach. The mollusk then clings to the teenager’s head and never comes off again. A strange friendship is born between this improbable duo, in a story where “Disney invites (us) to share the magic of the holidays” winter.

Taika Waititi makes Christmas and Disney rhyme

Toy Story figurines, Star Wars lightsaber, Mickey hat, Iron Man posters or Nemo aquarium… each object from the young boy’s room in the short film also recalls a strong license from Disney. Santa Claus (1994), a film produced by the American firm, even takes its place at the center of the story.

The soundtrack of the short film is also a tribute to the Disney universe, since we can hear a new orchestral version of Part of Your World (Go there)a song from the cartoon The Little Mermaid (1989).

This is not the first collaboration between Disney and Taika Waiti, since the latter has already directed Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) for Marvel Studios, owned by the American firm. His films Jojo Rabbit (2019), Oscar for best adapted screenplay in 2020, and Next Goal Wins (2023), are produced by Searchlight Pictures, which is also owned by Walt Disney Studios.
