Party’s over as children demand DJs, private cinema screenings and go-karting to celebrate birthdays

The days of children’s parties featuring musical chairs, pass the parcel and pin the tail on the donkey may be over, a poll of parents shows.

For today’s youngsters now want DJs, private cinema screenings, go-karting and days out at Laser Quest.

And when it comes to party food, ham sandwiches and cheese and pineapple hedgehogs are out – in favour of sushi platters and pizzas.

The survey of 2,000 parents of under-13s found that the average birthday now costs £524 including venue hire, gifts and entertainment.

Stephen Wilson of Oxygen Activeplay, which commissioned the research, said: ‘Parents are passionate about throwing their children fun parties – but it seems they are having to navigate changing tastes.’
