This hack transforms any handbag into a crossbody – and all you need is a scarf

A silk scarf is worth the investment. Tied around your neck or in your hair, it can dress up even the most simple outfit, such as jeans and a white tee. You can wear it as a top à la Beyoncé in the early noughties, or you can frame your favourite design and hang it on a wall.

Knotting a silk scarf around a bag strap (or wrapping it around the handles to protect the leather) is also not a new trick among the fashion set, but you know what is? Tying it to your bag to turn a handbag into a crossbody.

New York City-based fashion stylist and influencer Delya Seratini surprised her followers on Instagram when she not only showed off her outfit details of the day in a recent video, but also shared a ‘little styling trick’ that involves using a silk scarf as a bag strap ‘to free up your hands for a cup of coffee’.

In the 24-second clip, which has now been viewed over a million times, she steps back from the camera to unveil how she’s transformed her Longchamp Le Pliage pouch into a cute crossbody bag by folding a large silk scarf into a triangle and tying both ends to the handle.

As she adjusted the scarf over her shoulder to show off the print, a passerby commented, ‘You look cute! Comfortable,’ and we couldn’t agree more. Her ‘little trick’ instantly added some colour and visual interest to the grey joggers, cardigan and Birkenstocks combo.

But in our opinion, the best thing about this hack is that you can match the scarf to your outfit. While we’d advise against chunky knits (they would just be too difficult to tie), a fine-knit merino wool or cashmere bandana would work perfectly. Just make sure to knot it onto a small bag that isn’t too heavy, to avoid the scarf from stretching.
