Venezuela held elections on July 28, after which the president Nicolas Maduro claimed his victory with just over 51 percent of the votes, although the opposition, with its candidate Edmundo Gonzalez in front, they assure that the process was not clean and they defend having won the elections, which is why they ask for a recount of the electoral records.
In this context, these thirty countries have demanded the Immediate release of all detained persons in the opposition protests against the election results, while rejecting the arrest warrant “for political reasons” issued against González, “who, according to publicly available electoral records, obtained the majority of the votes in the elections” .
“It is essential that Venezuelans be allowed to express their opinions policies peacefully, including through the exercise of freedom of peaceful assembly and expression, without fear of reprisals. We demand that the excessive use of force, political violence and harassment against the opposition and civil society be put to an end,” the letter reads.
This joint declaration, in which the signatories include Spain, the United States, the European UnionCanada, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom and several Latin American countries, arises after a meeting organized by the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinkenin New York on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly and attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares.
