Intense rains leave Villahermosa under water – El Financiero

This Saturday, an intense whirlwind surprised the inhabitants of Villahermosacapital of Tabascocausing floods in various streets, vehicular chaos, and damage to homes and businesses.

The rains exceeded the capacity of the drainage system, leaving several areas of the city under water in a matter of minutes.

Lamberto Castellanos Avenue was one of the most affected areas, where a supermarket, a shopping plaza and, a few meters away, the PEMEX Regional Hospital were surrounded by water.

Several vehicles were stranded, as The water level prevented drivers from moving their cars and people had to cross on foot, with the risk of falling into a sewer.

According to the Centro city council, the accumulation of garbage prevented the proper functioning of the sump located at this point, so cleaning personnel came to remove the solid waste and help clear the water.

The Villahermosa-Cárdenas highway It also presented serious flooding, particularly near the Anacleto Canabal ranchería, where traffic slowed down noticeably and several cars suffered electrical failures when trying to cross flooded areas.


Among the most critical areas were Adolfo Ruiz Cortines Boulevard, the Carlos Pellicer Cámara peripheral and the La Manga 2 neighborhood, where the streets were flooded, affecting dozens of vehicles.

In Ruiz Cortines, traffic was almost impossible, with cars advancing at every turn, especially in the area near Paseo Tabasco, where several units were stranded.

Civil Protection personnel went to different parts of the city to assist affected motorists, as happened in Ruiz Cortines, in front of Plaza Olmeca, where they provided support to those who were trapped by the water.

The Villahermosa Observatory reported a cumulative rainfall of 72 mm, which caused neighborhoods and avenues to register flooding.

The Alto Grijalva Dam Management Commission reported an average daily expenditure of 462 m³/s in the Peñitas damand urged citizens to stay informed through official sources to avoid rumors and unnecessary alarms.

The weather forecast warns of possible moderate to heavy rains in the next few hoursas well as in the municipalities of Comalcalco, Cárdenas, and Huimanguillowhere new floods could be recorded.

The authorities have activated three fire brigades to respond to emergencies and recommend that the population circulate with caution in affected areas.
