Anna Kendrick Recalls Taking Mushrooms With ‘Pitch Perfect’ Co-Star

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Anna Kendrick plans on “taking it easy” this Halloween.

The Self Reliance actress, 39, revealed the previous year’s celebration got a bit too crazy for her, thanks to some mushroom chocolates, while appearing on the Wednesday, October 23 episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

She began by explaining she had attended a Halloween party with her good friend and Pitch Perfect co-star, Brittany Snow. “Someone asked if I wanted to try microdosing mushrooms,” Kendrick said, before adding, “And I was like, ‘Yeah, you know, I’m fun.’ And that’s how you know you’re fun, when you have to say it out loud.” They had a chocolate bar, and everyone took a square, with Kendrick noting that she had only eaten about half of her square, to be careful.

However, the Alice, Darling star then revealed, “And that’s the night I learned that chocolate is not a great delivery system for mushrooms, because sometimes it doesn’t mix properly, and sometimes there can be one little bite that doesn’t have a microdose, it has a real macro dose.” By the luck of the draw, Kendrick seemed to get the macro-dosed piece, which she couldn’t hide from those around her.

“I just start saying, ‘Oh no. Oh, I’m so high. Oh God, I’m so high,'” she explained. Once Snow, 38, realized things had gone south for Kendrick, her solution was to meet her friend where she was. “Like a hero,” Kendrick explained, Snow just “took a bunch more mushrooms,” which led to the two isolating themselves at the party, “grinning like the Joker,” while also crying.

Kendrick insisted that despite appearances, the two felt great, and spent the time exchanging compliments like, “You’re so beautiful,” and “You’re so talented.” At one point, Kendrick even declared that Snow was a “creative genius” and should “remake the film Chinatown.”

Kendrick, who was there to promote her directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, used the anecdote to warn kids not to do drugs. “Learn from my mistakes,” she quipped. She was laughably stumped when Colbert asked, “Quick question: is this legal?”

“Sorry, everybody. This is for entertainment purposes only,” she shared, while plastering on a big Hollywood smile, after declaring she actually wasn’t sure if it was legal or not. “You’ll find out tomorrow morning,” Colbert joked.

Woman of the Hour is streaming on Netflix.
