Watch Dog Desperately Try to Greet Owner, but ‘Cannot Figure Out’ Mirror

Senior dog Daisy had a difficult life before being adopted by Suzie Nuttall, but once she became a part of her family, they quickly developed a strong bond.

“The big story with Daisy is the power of love,” Nuttall told Newsweek. “Love healed her.”

Nuttall, who has recently retired and now lives on Vancouver Island, off Canada’s Pacific Coast, previously lived in Hong Kong, where she took Daisy in after she had suffered a life in a puppy mill.

“She was so sick and timid when we got her. She had spent her life up to that point in a cage producing litter after litter,” Nuttall said. “Once deemed healthy enough by the vet, she came to us. It took her more than six months to heal from a broken, depressed, traumatized critter to the lovely dog you saw in the mirror.”

That moment of Daisy in the mirror has gone viral as Nuttall shared the clip of her now-deceased pet to her TikTok account, @nuttiedb. Posted on September 20, it has been viewed over 2.3 million times and racked up more than 366,000 likes.

Taken some years ago, the footage shows Daisy attempting to greet her owner as she arrives home, but is in fact watching her reflection in the mirror. As the person behind the camera moves closer to her, Daisy, who has her back turned, tries to run toward her—only to find a second dog, Daisy’s reflection—in her way.

“We’re coming home and Daisy sees us, but she doesn’t realize we’re behind her,” the person behind the camera says.

Daisy’s tail wags furiously as the woman gets closer to her, not realizing she is sitting behind her. Until, eventually, the woman gives her a pat and helps turn her around, at which point Daisy leaps onto her lap.

TikTok users instantly fell in love with the sweet clip, with one commenter writing: “I’m trying but this dang dog is in my way!”

“Cuteness 100%, IQ 1%,” another posted, while a third commented: “She was getting super mad at that other dog that was blocking her perfectly from getting to you.” Nuttall replied that Daisy “probably thought it was a new friend.”

Nuttall wrote in a comment that Daisy was deaf, and told Newsweek she was around 12 years old in the mirror video, but “as a rescue, we only had an estimate of her age,” as well as her breed, believed to be a toy poodle.

Puppy mills are for-profit dog breeding industries where female dogs are bred at every opportunity, even if they are sick or have genetic traits that could be damaging to the puppies, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

The animals may be kept in tiny cages to maximize space and, therefore, profits, and puppies are immediately removed from the mother once there is a buyer, which can lead to lasting behavioral problems.

Daisy has passed on since the video was taken, and Nuttall wrote in the caption: “When your dog cannot figure out how the mirror works. So sweet. I miss her so much.”

Nuttall told Newsweek: “It was the first and only time Daisy took any interest in the mirror. She had her ‘ah ha’ moment when she turned around.

“We loved her dearly, ” she said. “She was just the best dog.”
