Gen Z Server Training Teen New Hire Leaves Internet in Stitches

Footage of Generation Z hospitality staff has left internet viewers in hysterics, and some may say, for the wrong reasons.

Racking up over 1.2 million views, the viral TikTok video shared by @stefanispizzeria shows an 18-year-old new hire attempting to transfer sauce from one plastic bottle to another. It may sound simple, but it certainly doesn’t look it, as she tries to squirt it from one nozzle to the next.

Fortunately, another staff member, 19, is around to help. However, what she did next has riled up internet users: she took the lid off and then placed it upside down inside the bottle.

Newsweek discussed the clip, captioned: “Common sense ain’t that common,” with one of the owners, Becky, who said that all isn’t as it seems.

“Is it not just easier to take the lid off fully?” asked one user, a question echoed by many. Another wrote: “The blind leading the blind.”

“We just try to have a bit of fun and do something different to create a different type of marketing,” Becky, based in Blackpool, England, told Newsweek.

This isn’t the first time Gen Z workers have helped companies appeal to a younger demographic. Last month, employees were let loose to write marketing scripts, which were recited by baby boomer staff, leaving many in hysterics.

Last month, a critical synthesis of empirical studies titled “Hospitality in the Age of Gen Z: A Critical Reflection on Evolving Customer and Workforce Expectations,” was published in the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, Volume 36, Issue 13. It explores how those born between 1997 and 2012 behave as both customers and employees in the hospitality industry.

The researchers found that, as employees, Gen Z prioritizes flexible work arrangements, career growth opportunities, and workplaces committed to sustainability, diversity, and social responsibility.

To meet these expectations, hospitality businesses must adapt their customer service, marketing, and HR practices. This involves:

  • Delivering personalized experiences.
  • Leveraging technology.
  • Adopting sustainable practices.
  • Offering flexible work environments
  • Investing in professional development

To attract Gen Z employees effectively, businesses need to understand their values, as this can improve customer satisfaction, attract top talent, and help companies stay competitive in a rapidly changing market.

Previous reports have shown that Gen Z workers differ significantly from other generations and often face criticism for their work habits. One survey found that many in this generation aren’t ready to work, while another said they are often the first to be let go during layoffs.
