The thermometers of violence and insecurity – El Financiero

At the national level, a high number of intentional homicides, well between January and September of 2024 were reported 22 thousand 758 cases in the country, 0.5 percent more than in the same period of the previous year and only 2.4 percent less than in the same nine months of 2022, according to the records of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.

The levels of insecurity do not diminish, as shown by the average of 86.8 intentional homicides per day in September, higher than the previous two months.

You cannot minimize the problems of insecurity in places like Sinaloa, where Culiacán and surrounding municipalities continue to be shaken by the wave of violence; Warrior, where the mayor of Chilpancingo was murdered with the cruel seal of organized crime, or Chiapas, where a priest was shot dead after leaving a mass in San Cristóbal de las Casas.

In the 70 months of the administration led by the former president Lopez Obrador, the accumulated number of people murdered In Mexico, both in the form of intentional homicide and feminicide, it was 199 thousand 952 victims, preliminarily.

The high levels of violence correspond to the perception of insecurity among Mexicans.

According to the INEGI National Urban Public Security Survey, by the third quarter of 2024 practically 6 out of 10 adults –58.6 percent– They considered living in their city to be unsafe.

Although at the national level it moderated two quarterly periods and is the lowest proportion since the INEGI began conducting the survey in September 2013, a reading of the feeling of insecurity of 6 out of 10 has been maintained since the end of 2022 .

Tapachula, with 91.9 percent; Naucalpan de Juárez, with 88 percent, and Fresnillo, with 87.9 percent, are the three cities in which more insecurity is perceived.

But urban populations with greater increases in perception of insecurity between the second quarter of the year and the third are Culiacán, from 44.7 to 55.7 percent; Mexicali, from 60.4 to 69.2 percent; Tuxtla Gutierrez, from 77.5 to 85.9 percent, and Tapachula, from 84.7 to the aforementioned 91.9 percent.

The places where Mexicans feel most insecure continue to be ATMs located on public roads, public transportation, highways and streets that they usually use, the INEGI survey shows.

43.1 percent of the adult population, residing in the cities studied by the ENSU, stated that during the third quarter of 2024 they modified their habits regarding “carrying valuable things such as jewelry, money or credit cards” for fear of suffer some crime.

While 41.4 percent acknowledged having changed habits regarding “allowing minor (children) to leave their home alone,” and 38.3 percent said they no longer “walk around their home after 8 p.m.” .

The problems that continue to affect people and companies in Mexico are insecurity and corruption.

According to the Mexican Economic Confidence Index of the Mexican Institute of Public Accountants (IMCP), last September the main obstacle that the companies faced were unsafe conditions in the country.

This was considered by 72 percent of public accountants, represented in more than 60 IMCP associations, in which professionals in the field, partners of accounting firms, who in turn provide their services to multiple companies in Mexico, participate.

Second, funding availability and corruption were equally highlighted, both with 48 percent of mentions of public accounting.

It has been several months now that insecurity is the most mentioned factor as the main obstacle to economic growth.

It beats by a wide margin the other elements identified as the greatest brake on the development of business in Mexico, according to surveys carried out among public accountants.

What the national measurements, both official and union, reveal is the damage what is caused to citizenship and productive activity given the levels of insecurity in the country in a context of growing impunity.
