Why did Jorge Islas reject Juan Ramón de la Fuente’s invitation to be consulate coordinator? – The Financier

He former consul of Mexico in New York, Jorge Islas López, announced this Tuesday that he has declined the invitation made to him by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Juan Ramon de la Fuenteto be in front of the General Coordination of Consulates.

Through a statement, Islas expressed its decision to decline said invitation before harassment complaints, harassment and discrimination made by his collaborators, which he described as “unfounded accusations.”

The above arises after a group of 16 women made up of workers from the Mexican Foreign Service (SEM) and the Consul General of Mexico in New York will send a letter addressed to the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumin which they denounce said abuses.

Jorge Islas indicated that he made the decision not to be in charge of the coordination of consulates to be in line with his convictions in favor of the human rights; He also defended that he has two daughters who are feminists and, therefore, tries to be more aware of the importance of equality between women and men.

According to the document presented last Thursday, October 17, it indicates that complaints against the official had already been presented to the Mexican Foreign Ministry, the Secretariat of Public Function (SFP) and the Internal Control Body (OIC)but only recommendations were made for Islas López to take training on gender, discrimination, assertiveness, leadership and teamwork.

Likewise, he specified that his interest in the debate on these issues “maintains a level of objectivity, honesty and progressiveness based on truth and justice.”


However, it was not until this Tuesday that the former consul thanked the chancellor for considering him to take the position as well as the expressions of solidarity, affection and support that he received through different means and places, especially from the community of Mexican migrants in New York.

“I thank Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente for considering me for such an important responsibility, which will support and strengthen the rights of our countrymen who live abroad,” he concluded.

Who is Jorge Islas López, former Mexican consul in New York?

Jorge Islas López is a lawyer specialized in transparency and the right to information. He has a degree in Law from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and studied a master’s degree in Law at Columbia University.

He served as a professor at the UNAM Law School and at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM).

Between 2002 and 2027 he was a member of the International Board of Directors of the Article XIX associationan organization based in London.

Participated as legal consultant for TV Aztecs between 1997 and 2002. He was appointed vice president of the Legal Committee of the North American Broadcasting Association (NABA), headquartered in Toronto, Canada. He was also legal director of the National Chamber of the Radio and Television Industry (CIRT).

In May 2019, he was appointed Consul General of Mexico in New York, during the López Obrador government.
