Houston Rockets star guard and former No. 2 overall pick Jalen Green has agreed to a three-year, $106 million rookie extension with the franchise.

Green became the first-ever NBA player to successfully negotiate a 2-plus-1 rookie extension on a nine-figure deal.
Green’s three-year deal provides him with financial flexibility in the short term and the ability to earn more than $240 million over the next five years.
The 22-year-old is about to enter his fourth season in the league after the Rockets selected Green with the No. 2 overall pick from NBA G League Ignite. Prior to joining the G League Ignite, he was a consensus five-star recruit and the number-one shooting guard in the 2020 recruiting class.
Green received many scholarship offers from D-1 schools like Auburn, Oregon, and Memphis, but ultimately, he turned them down for the G League.
In three seasons thus far, Green has averaged 19.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 42.1 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from three. As a rookie, Green was initially signed to a four-year, $40.8 million contract.
Green is one of the many who have agreed to rookie contract extensions for the 2021 class, including Cade Cunningham (Pistons), Evan Mobley (Cavaliers), Scottie Barnes (Raptors), Franz Wagner (Magic), Jalen Suggs (Magic), Moses Moody (Warriors), Alperen Şengün (Rockets), and Trey Murphy III (Pelicans).
Last season, Green arguably had his best season. He averaged 19.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 0.8 steals while shooting 42.3 percent from the field and 33.2 percent from three in 82 games, all of which were starts.
The Rockets finished the season as the 11th seed and were five games out of the final play-in spot. They finished the season with a 41-41 record, their best since the 2019-20 season when they finished 44-28.
Houston has been through a rebuild this past handful of seasons, but if things continue to trend upward, they could be one of the surprise teams in the NBA.
It will be an uphill battle, as the Western Conference is loaded with talent, but the Rockets have youth, talent, and a great head coach by their side.
This season will tell us a lot about the Rockets and Green as they look for their first postseason appearance in quite a while.
