The GP, dentist and cashpoint deserts in England and Wales… and the best place to live if you love the pub: Interactive map lays bare the postcode lottery of Brits’ access to amenities

The postcode lottery Brits face for GPs, dentists, cashpoints and even pubs has been laid bare in a new interactive map.

Official figures show the huge variations in access to amenities across England and Wales.

It gives an insight into life in local areas, covering everything from rail stations, parks and play areas to libraries and churches.

In Winchester there are only eight GP surgeries per 100,000 people, and South Gloucestershire has just nine.

In contrast the ratio in Derbyshire Dales is 22, according to the Office for National Statistics.

In West Lindsey there are seven dental practices for every 100,000 people – while the level was barely higher in places like Tonbridge & Malling.

However, Hammersmith & Fulham has 26 dentists per 100,000 population.

Concerns have been raised over the dwindling numbers of cashpoints, as much of society shifts away from using cash.

While Great Yarmouth has 155 ATMs for every 100,000 people, in Wealden the ratio is only 37.

Derbyshire Dales also appears to be the pub capital of England & Wales.

There are 185 drinking holes for every 100,000 people in the area – equivalent to one for every 540 individuals.

In Castle Point in Essex the figures is just 16.

There are also huge differences in access to places of worship.

In Worthing there are a mere 44 per 100,000 people.

But in Powys the ratio is 367. That means there is one place of worship for every 272 people.

The ONS said that rural communities did better than urban ones for pubs and parks.

They tended to be worse for amenities such as cashpoints, pharmacies and rail stations.

The ONS used ordnance survey information to analyse the distances people needed to walk to key services.

Across England and Wales, 57 per cent of the population were within a 30-minute walk of a railway station.

And 43 per cent have a public library within a 15-minute walk.
