Spain agrees with Portugal to build a new international bridge over the Guadiana River

He Council of Ministers agreed this Tuesday to authorize the signing of the agreement between Spain and Portugal for the construction of a new international bridge over the Guadiana Riverbetween the towns of Sanlúcar de Guadiana (Huelva) and Alcoutim (Algarve).

As described in the Council’s references, it is an agreement that covers the project to construct a bridge that connects the aforementioned towns, to physically allow traffic and communication between the two. This milestone had been included in the Final Declarations of successive Iberian Summits.

The text of the agreement responds to the spirit of friendly cooperation that governs relations between Spain and Portugal and aspires to improve conditions for vehicle circulation and people between the two States. With this, they intend to develop the cross-border area that is located in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia and the Algarve Region.

Thus, the walkway between Sanlúcar de Guadiana and Alcoutim will be a new border connection among the Iberian countries. In this sense, it joins the three existing international bridges: between Ayamonte and Castro Marim, El Granado and Pomarao and Paymogo and São Marcos.

Just three days ago, the general secretary of Foreign Action of the Government of Andalusia, Enric Millo, had claimed the construction of the bridge as “fundamental” in Sanlúcar de Guadiana. “We appreciate the efforts of the neighboring country to promote and undertake the construction of this strategic infrastructure, which will contribute to the socioeconomic development of the area and the well-being of citizens,” he added.
