John Galliano (here in New York in 2017) leaves Maison Margiela after ten years as artistic director
FASHION – The British John Galliano, star designer, whimsical and controversial, announced this Wednesday, December 11 on Instagram his departure from Maison Margielaof which he was the discreet artistic director for ten years.
“Today is the day I say goodbye to Maison Margiela”he wrote in a long press release. But without saying more about the rest of his career.
“The rumors… Everyone wants to know and everyone wants to dream. When the time comes, all will be revealed”he added, while the fashion world has been buzzing for months about its future.
John Galliano said “his gratitude to his fashion family for this creative moment” who gave him “saved his life” and for this “cocoon that we created together”.
The designer, considered one of the most brilliant of his generation, was ousted from Dior in 2011 after an altercation where, drunk, he hurled anti-Semitic insults at customers in a Parisian bar. Six months after his dismissal, he was sentenced to a suspended fine of 6,000 euros.
After a descent into hell of three and a half years and a detoxification treatment, repeating that he was neither racist nor anti-Semitic, he found refuge in the discreet Maison Margiela, which appointed him artistic director.
In his post on Instagram on Wednesday, he repeats being “sober for 14 years” and pays tribute to Renzo Rosso, owner of the OTB group which owns Maison Margiela: “The most precious gift he gave me was giving me the opportunity to find, once again, my creative voice when I had lost it”.
His January 2024 fashion show moved the 250 spectators to tears with his collection “Artisanal”exuberant, inspired by Paris “end of the century”.
