Brisbane man plans court action over horror injury at WhiteWater World

A Brisbane man is mulling court action after suffering a broken collarbone while on a ride at a Gold Coast theme park last year.

Lachlan Steger, 25, said he “completely snapped” his clavicle while riding the Triple Vortex at WhiteWater World, leading to the insertion of a metal plate in his shoulder and nerve damage.

“Coming around the third bend on the raft, I’ve gone up about two-and-a-half feet,” Mr Steger told 7 News.

“And then, instead of essentially flipping around and coming back down, I’ve fallen out of the raft,” he said.

“When I was in the air, I remember making the decision to whether to hit my head or hit my shoulder.”

On Dreamworld’s website, the Triple Vortex is described as the “hottest tubing ride on the planet,” which “oscillates” the rider through multiple funnels.

Mr Steger has also made the explosive claim that in the immediate aftermath of the accident, WhiteWater World staff were more interested in getting him to sign a nondisclosure agreement than his health.

He said while paramedics were offering him analgesics, park staff asked him to sign a waiver that would have prevented him from taking further action.

Should the matter proceed to the courts, it wouldn’t be the first time Dreamworld has faced legal battles.

In 2020, the mother of an eight-year-old girl sued the company after her daughter suffered a distressing injury on a water slide.

Ardent Leisure, WhiteWater World’s parent company, were contacted by NCA Newswire on Tuesday.

In separate media reports, the company has refuted Steger’s claims.

“Dreamworld and WhiteWater World refute any accusations of asking the guest to sign a nondisclosure agreement,” the company is reported to have said.

“This is not standard practice for any injury as the Park Health team is focused only on providing medical attention as efficiently as possible.”

“The guest in question was provided with medical attention immediately and pain relief was provided by Park Health within minutes, which effectively demonstrates the team’s focus on providing the guest with urgent medical attention while they awaited and ambulance.”
