Coupe de France (7th round): cruel for Saint-Malo, Caen qualified

It was one of the posters of this 7th round of the French Cup in Brittany.

US Saint-Malo (National 2) hosted Stade Malherbe de Caen (Ligue 2). A match that ultimately came down to a matter of penalties and a feeling of injustice for the Malouins.

Because despite two divisions apart, the Bretons did better than stand up to their Norman neighbors. We even ended up believing in the magic of the Coupe de France and a victory for the Malouins in a Marville stadium which ended white-hot.

Three penalties whistled during the match

It was also off to a good start after a foul by Caennais Hugo Vandermersch on Saint-Malo striker Sofian Valla, a few minutes before half-time. The other Sofiane (with an e) Barroug did not tremble and aligned the Norman goalkeeper Anthony Mandrea. 1-0 at the break.

The turning point? The (severe) exclusion of Bilal Cissé in the 63′ after a fault on Alexandre Mendy and the (logical) penalty transformed by the Norman Jessy Deminguet.

There remained then less than half an hour to play and the Malouins, however reduced to ten, did not abdicate. We even sometimes wondered who was outnumbered.

And then there was this (involuntary) hand from Alexandre le Nedic ten minutes from the final whistle. Alexandre Mendy was quick to line up Breton goalkeeper Nathan Yavorski.

The Saint-Malo bench was furious. And cried foul, like the public at Marville. Coach Gwen Corbin threw his time. His deputy Abdel El Kouraichi took a yellow in turn.

The 1,697 spectators of Marville drunk with joy at the end of regulation time

On the green rectangle, far from being defeated, the Whites of Saint-Malo pushed on and the Normans trembled. Shaken from all sides… Until this in-extremis goal from Guillaume Heinry in the very last seconds. An incredible twist that overwhelmed the 1,697 spectators of Marville. After such a blow, nothing more, it was thought, could happen to the locals.

Goodbye Cup

The terrible penalty shootout decided otherwise. The Malouin Sofiane Barroug was missing. Then the Caennais Alexandre Mendy did the same. Unfortunately for the USSM, its last shooter Christian Kitenge also failed. Cruel for Saint-Malo which therefore bids farewell to the Coupe de France for this 2022-2023 season.

A trip to… Caen on Saturday

The 8th round will be played in mid-November before the Ligue 1 enter the next round, in early January, after the World Cup in Qatar.

Until then, return to the championship next Saturday with a trip from Caen to Valenciennes in Ligue 2 and from Saint-Malo to… Caen, to face the reserve of Stade Malherbe, in National 2.
