2nd suspect arrested in July fatal shooting of Curtis Ashford Jr.

A second man has been arrested for the shooting murder of 15-year-old Curtis Ashford Jr.

Thursday’s arrest of Zontre Mack, 19, of Canton, in connection with Ashford’s July 27 murder followed the Sept. 26 arrest of Dominick Gavin, 25, of Boston.

“The shooting death of a 15-year-old should not — and must not — become an event affecting only the victim’s loved ones and those of us responsible for bringing the offenders to justice,” Suffolk DA Kevin Hayden said in a Friday statement following Mack’s arraignment.

“This crime should shock and outrage everyone, and should make all of us work together to reduce these shattering acts of violence,” he continued. “I have a 15-year-old son. My heart and soul break with sorrow for Curtis’s family.”

Judge Erika Reis ordered Mack held without bail when he appeared in municipal court in Dorchester on Friday on charges of murder and possession of a firearm without a license. Gavin was arraigned in September and is also being held without bail.

Ashford was playing basketball at a playground in the Erie-Ellington neighborhood — an area bounded by Columbia Road, Washington Street and Blue Hill Avenue — when he was gunned down around 7:30 p.m. He would be pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center within the hour, the Herald previously reported.

His mother told TV stations that day that he had promised to be home by 8 p.m.

Evidence shows Gavin drove Mack to the area of Ellington Street a little before 7:30 p.m. and Mack got out and started firing at a group that included Ashford, prosecutor Julie Higgins said. The group fled but Ashford was shot in the back as he fled.

As of Oct. 16, which is the most recent data available from the Boston Police Department, there had been 22 fatal shootings so far this year in Boston, with Ashford being the 17th to die. That’s the same number of fatal shootings by the same time last year, but the 146 total shooting victims across the city was 20 fewer than the year before.

Ashford’s father was stabbed to death 14 years ago when friends say that he was trying to stop a fight.
