Siriluck Fatima Chimmalee: Alleged love scammer and million-dollar money launderer to face three trials

A woman charged with allegedly scamming hundreds of thousands of dollars from men on online dating apps will face three separate trials for more than 100 charges.

Siriluck Fatima Chimmalee, 28, appeared in Sydney Downing Centre District Court this week after being charged with 103 offences including dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception, dealing with identity information to commit an indictable offence, and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

Police allege the Thai national was involved in a scam that stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from men she met online through dating apps.

According to police allegations outlined in the court documents, Ms Chimmalee pretended to be a registered remitter and charged customers inflated rates to exchange large sums of money from Australia to foreign countries.

Police claim she used social media to target her victims and to show off her lavish lifestyle, including Gucci and Chanel shoes and Louis Vuitton handbags.

On Monday, the court heard Ms Chimmalee would face at least three trials for the raft of more than 100 charges.

The first trial was due to start on Monday, but the court heard it could not begin until a trial of an alleged conspirator had concluded.

Judge Dina Yehia adjourned the trial until Wednesday when she ordered the pre-trial arguments to commence.

Defence lawyer Meredith Phelps suggested the matter may need to be adjourned again after she was served with “very pertinent” documents on Monday morning that she had not previously seen.

She said the documents referred to IP addresses, cookies and other detailed information she would need to verify.

Ms Phelps told the court she has been unable to properly meet with her client to show her relevant electronic material due to restrictions on bringing computers into jailed areas.

Despite the issues contacting the defendant, the first trial will begin on Monday before Judge Robert Sutherland.

Ms Chimmalee will remain in custody after her bid for bail was denied on Friday.

She has been in custody since she was arrested in February 2020 after seven unsuccessful applications for bail, according to the court documents.

The court was told it was likely the first two trials relating to Ms Chimmalee would not be concluded by August.
