Further setbacks for Boris Johnson after British elections

Conservative Imran Ahmad Khan left his parliamentary seat on May 3, when he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy. The next day, party comrade Neil Parish also left his seat after it emerged that he had been surfing porn while waiting for a vote in the British House of Commons. Thus, their mandate became vacant for by-elections held on Thursday, in the constituencies of Tiverton and Honiton and Wakefield, respectively.

Tiverton and Honiton have been described as one of the Conservatives’ strongest strongholds and have been the party’s since it became a constituency in 1997. In Thursday’s election, the party fell almost 22 percentage points from the 2019 election and Liberal Democrat Richard Foord rose 38.6 percentage points to 53.1 percent. the largest shift in a constituency since 1985.

The Wakefield constituency had been Labor since 1932 when Imran Ahmad Khan took the seat three years ago but the candidate Nadeem Ahmed could only attract just over 30.3 percent of the voters against the Labor candidate Simon Lightwoods 48.4.

Two tangible losses to two different parties at each end of the country for Prime Minister Boris Johnson, in short.

The head of government has been under severe pressure due to the police investigations into all unauthorized party gatherings arranged by various parts of the administration during the pandemic. The popular dissatisfaction has been great and showed itself in the local elections on 5 May when the Conservative Party lost 485 seats and twelve councils, including the otherwise almost obvious walking victories in the London strongholds Wandsworth and Westminster.

“Someone has to take responsibility,” party chairman Dowden wrote in a letter, saying he could not continue in office. For the time being, however, the recipient of the letter, Boris Johnson, has said nothing more than that he intends to remain as Prime Minister, a position of trust that he will have held for three years in a month’s time.

– What we need to do now is to reflect on where the voters are and what they basically feel is that we got through covid well and we made many right decisions in it. But we are facing pressure on the cost of living, we are seeing heartbreaking cost spikes on fuel, energy and food, so we must acknowledge that there is more we need to do and we will definitely do it. We will continue to address people’s important issues until we get through this downturn, says Boris Johnson BBC.

Outgoing Chairman Dowden has been a loyal Johnson loyalist, but in his resignation letter he does not mention that the prime minister should remain. More and more conservative representatives at various levels have turned their backs on Boris Johnson – more than 40 percent of party comrades voted against him in a no-confidence vote earlier in June – and among party voters, the prime minister is the only prime minister with a negative net of trust, according to the Boris Johnson-critical blog Conservative Home which is popular among the grass roots.

Tory veteran Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, a board member of the party’s influential 1922 Committee, says it is now possible that colleagues will have to “take action to get a new prime minister” and Angela Richardson who resigned after “partygate” twitter that it is absolutely not Dowden who is to blame for the party’s defeat in the by – elections.

– What a verdict this is for the Tories and Boris Johnson, what a verdict it is for them. They lack grounding in reality and have no ideas, and if they had any decency at all, they would move for the country, says Labor party leader Keir Starmer to the press.
