With the granting of EU candidate status to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, the European Union demonstrates its unwavering commitment to these countries and their freely chosen European course, said David McAllister, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
He stressed that the decision marks a historic moment for the European Union: “It is a demonstration of leadership, responsibility, determination and a political vision of the authorities as well as a sign of hope for the people of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. “I welcome today’s decision of the European Council at a time of unprecedented geopolitical challenges when its government has met the set priorities.”
He also noted that “As the accession of these countries to the EU will be value-based, adherent to the relevant procedures and subject to the fulfillment of the set criteria, I call on the authorities of Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia to pursue the relevant reforms, in particular democracy, the rule of law, human rights, the market economy and the implementation of the EU acquis. The European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee will closely monitor the enlargement negotiations and support all three countries towards further accession to the European Union “ the announcement concludes.
