Opposition locates government failure – California18

For FPÖ club chairman Herbert Kickl, an appointment with the health committee is needed soon so that the law can be abolished before the summer break. However, the Covid-19 Measures Act must also fall with the Vaccination Act, as this enables “vaccination obligation via the back door”. “The Minister of Health can use ordinances at any time to implement measures such as 2-G access regulations, lockdowns for the unvaccinated and thus the exclusion of the unvaccinated from public life,” Kickl is quoted as saying in a broadcast.

The Upper Austrian state party chairman Manfred Haimbuchner described the decision as a “success for freedom” and “a step out of the social divide towards a new togetherness”. However, the previous “zigzag course” of the government had caused a lot of chaos.

End of compulsory vaccination

It was announced in November last year, came into force without sanctions in February, was suspended in March and now compulsory vaccination in Austria is history: Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) and ÖVP club chairman August Wöginger announced the decision on Thursday .

SPÖ: Government failure

SPÖ health spokesman Phillip Kucher sees it differently. The abolition of compulsory vaccination is the “temporary climax of government failure”. He asks the government to justify the experts on the basis of which the decision was made. While experts are expecting 30,000 new infections a day as early as July, the government is trying to distract from its “unsuitable package against inflation” by lifting the vaccination requirement, says Kucher.

The Vienna City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ), on the other hand, has no problem with an end to compulsory vaccination. “I’m not going to fight it. That wasn’t our idea in Vienna, we supported it,” he said. The planned commitment has led to many misunderstandings and misinterpretations. With a new wave it will probably be necessary to reintroduce restrictive measures, according to Hacker. In addition to an expansion of the mask requirement, the test system must also be “raised” – more on this in wien.ORF.at.

NEOS misses plan for autumn

“Announcing the end of compulsory vaccination in the middle of the summer wave fits in with the completely chaotic crisis management of the ÖVP and the Greens,” said deputy NEOS club chairman Niki Scherak. The government “screwed up” compulsory vaccination from the start and thus abused people’s trust. In addition, Scherak still sees no plan for the fall.

Unsurprisingly, Michael Brunner, MFG chairman and opponent of vaccination from the start, sees the abolition of compulsory vaccination as a “success for civil society”. For him, however, the decision was only politically motivated, Brunner is already expecting compulsory vaccination to be reintroduced after the Tyrolean state elections and is calling for new elections at federal level.

Nehammer: “Not the right measure”

On the sidelines of the EU summit in Brussels, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) also commented on the end of compulsory vaccination. There was “the insight that it was not the right measure to get the vaccination rate up,” said Nehammer. According to Nehammer, there is “an increase in the divisions in society,” his “mission” is to “fill in the rifts.” You have to “take out the emotionalization”, also with regard to the autumn, when the corona virus “will be a much bigger topic again.”

Greens: Everyone should pull together

The green constitution spokeswoman Agnes Sirkka Prammer and health spokesman Ralph Schallmeiner justify the end of compulsory vaccination with changed requirements and stand behind the decision. Both are sticking to the usefulness of the vaccination, in the summer more people should now be convinced of the vaccination with low-threshold campaigns. “But for this to happen, everyone must finally pull together – federal, state and local governments. Appropriate funds were paid out to the municipalities, which makes it all the more important to act now,” said Prammer and Schallmeiner in unison.

Vaccination obligation for state service in Lower Austria lifted

For Vorarlberg’s Health Minister Martina Rüscher (ÖVP), the abolition of compulsory vaccination is an “understandable step”. As recently as March, Rüscher described the suspension as a “wrong signal”. Due to the significantly milder course of the disease, there is no longer any need today. In Lower Austria, the obligation to vaccinate for the provincial service is also lifted. The development of the corona virus is “in a new phase”, according to the office of the state government – more on this in noe.ORF.at.
