Man shot twice during alleged theft of motorbikes in Greenhithe describes moment of impact

A man who was shot twice during an alleged theft of motorbikes has described what happened as “like a computer game”.

Ross Eaglestone told a jury he was not stealing bikes but was in fact “just out getting a bag of cannabis”.

Brothers Christopher Nourse, 43, of Ospringe Close, Penge, and Colin, 40, from Cooper Close, Greenhithe, have denied attempting to murder Mr Eaglestone and possessing weapons with intent on March 8 2020.

The prosecution has alleged he was shot when he was with a group of his friends trying to steal the motorbikes in Cooper Close.

But Mr Eaglestone, who was giving evidence via a TV link from prison with his left arm still bandaged, told Maidstone Crown Court he was in a van with other people attempting to get a bag of cannabis.

“On the way to get a bag of cannabis, I was shot en route,” he said. “I couldn’t tell you who shot me or why I was shot.”

In a statement he made in hospital, he said: “As we were walking into the car park a bald man appeared. I think he said something but I don’t know what.

“I could see a light flashing. He had whatever was in his hand straight out, shoulder height, directly aiming at us.”

“He started shooting at us. He felt close, about 20ft away. I heard a bang first. I turned to see. I could see he had something in his hand. To me it looked like a gun.

“I could see a light flashing. He had whatever was in his hand straight out, shoulder height, directly aiming at us.

“I heard about four of five bangs. I am about 70 to 80% sure there was another person firing at us. They were on the other side of the flats.”

He added: “I heard four to five bangs and then I felt like an impact and blood running down my arm. I looked at my left arm and it was just hanging there.

“I saw what had happened. I had been shot. I heard more shots really quick. The shots were coming from two different directions.”

Mr Eaglestone said he ran to the bottom of the car park where he tried, unsuccessfully, to get over a hedge.

“It was like I was in a computer game, everything went slowly,” he continued.

“I was shot again. This was in the same arm but lower down. I heard about 20 gunshots in quick succession. It happened quickly.”

After the shooting, he said he ran back to the van and drove to the home of a friend and then to hospital.

He gave a statement to police on the night he was shot, but said: “I don’t really remember. I went to hospital and don’t remember much after that.”

The trial continues.
