The protection of pigs in farms was the topic of the informative seminar for pig farmers that took place on Thursday morning at the conference center of the Regional Unit in Pyrgos on the initiative of the Veterinary Department of DAOK Ilia and the Veterinary Department of the Region of Western Greece.
The seminar presented the rules governing the framework for the protection and breeding of pigs in accordance with Community directives as well as the aid measures launched by the Ministry of Rural Development.

The Deputy Regional Head of Rural Development Theodoros Vassilopoulos In his position at the beginning of the seminar, he stressed that the pig sector in both the Regional Unit of Ilia and the Region in general presents remarkable dynamics despite the problems that exist and added: “The Region with its veterinarians and services is next to the pig farmers, an industry that was particularly affected during the two years of the pandemic, but they operate with professionalism and maintain our pig farming to high standards.. »
Reference was made to the seminar, among other things, for the pre-publication of the ministry’s challenge (it is expected to be issued in the 2nd half of 2022) so that every interested pig farmer is informed and properly prepared by taking relevant actions.
The aid concerns the implementation of specific animal welfare commitments, which provide upgraded standards of production methods in the areas of water, animal feed, housing conditions and practices that avoid the castration of animals and amount to, for sows (€ 54.5 / animal). ) for other pork (€ 7.5 / animal).
To the above amounts are added costs for laboratory analyzes of water quality control and costs for technical support (up to 5% of the estimated amount of annual aid).
