Bricklayer, 44, who won £1million on Ant & Dec TV show crept onto hospital ICU before stealing nurse’s handbag and car as she worked the night shift after turning to crime when he squandered his riches on fast cars, holidays and became a drug addict

A crook, who scored £1 million on an Ant and Dec TV show, stole a nurse’s bag whilst she worked a night shift on an intensive care unit to make ‘ends meet’.

Shameless thief, Nathan Hageman, 44, nabbed Samita Gurung’s handbag from her locker as she worked at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.

After swiping the bag, the brazen man met two co-accused before driving away from the hospital car park with her Ford Echo Sport and car keys in tow.

Despite having bagged £1million in the Geordie double act’s former show Red or Black? in 2011, the bricklayer turned to crime after squandering his riches on a luxury lifestyle of fast cars and lavish holidays.

He was handed a 12-week prison sentence but walked free as he had already spent the past six months in custody after confessing to taking a vehicle without the owner’s permission as well as theft last April.

Hagemann has been previously been behind bars on two separate occasions, once for harassing a woman by sending her over 400 threatening messages in 2014, and a second time for attacking his ex-partner in 2006.

Reading Crown Court heard how the nurse, Ms Gurung, thought she was ‘having a nightmare’ when she realised her possessions were gone on April 22.

In her victim impact statement, she said: ‘As a nurse working in the NHS we only get so much to make ends meet. I couldn’t afford to pay all my bills that month.

‘After working hard as a nurse in the ICU I do get tired and all I needed that night was to go back home, shower, have food and get into a warm bed.

‘I was also looking forward to the relaxing birthday week ahead of me after months of hard work – but it all got ruined.’

Police reviewed the hospital’s CCTV footage in which they spotted Hageman entering the hospital at around 10pm on April 22.

Hageman alleged he had simply found the bag and took it with him, before meeting his two accomplices and driving away with Ms Gurung’s car.

He was arrested the next day in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, alongside his co-accused Justin Clift, 36.

Gabriella Lewis, Hageman’s defence counsel, told the judge the former millionaire was ‘extremely remorseful’ for his actions.

‘This is his first time back in custody for some nine years. At the time, he was dependent on class A drugs and he deeply, deeply regrets becoming involved in drug use.

Hageman, who appeared via video link from HMP Wormwood Scrubs, dressed in prisoner’s grey sweater and tracksuit, admitted one count of taking a vehicle without the owner’s permission and another of theft.

His co-defendant, Justin Clift, from Beaconsfield Road in Canterbury, Kent, was sentenced to 16 weeks and also released.

‘Your victim was a nurse performing a vital public service,’ Mr Recorder Broe told the defendants.

‘She should be able to feel safe when doing so. I doubt that you gave her a thought. It is clear that you have no regard for the law.’
